A Rare Moment of Political Commentary
Ariail is one of my favorite political satirist. I hope you enjoy this brief reality check:
http://ariail.thestateonline.com/?p=517
All idiom-ed up,
-J
P.S. Please don't mistake the general absence of political statements for a lack of political opinions. I have many and strong ones. But the heartbeat of my life is Jesus, so that's mostly what come out here. As ShalomSeeker (Shalom being the Hebrew word for peace), I try to keep peace around here, and politics can get mighty fractious. But if Jesus gets divisive...well, that just can't be helped, now can it? :-)
A TRUE Reality Check:
What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. --I Corinthians 7:29-31, NIV

Blah, Blah, Blah...*wink*
So I was pretty encouraged when this quote popped up on my google home page today: Only the mediocre are always at their best. - Jean Giraudoux
I feel a lot better now, as I am definitely not at my best, and I definitely don't want to be mediocre.
Then, I decided to figure out who Jean Giraudoux was. I did a quick search, and discovered that he was a French novelist/dramatist who lived through WWI and died toward the end of WWII. And then I ran across this quote...
When you see a woman who can go nowhere without a staff of admirers, it is not so much because they think she is beautiful; it is because she has told them they are handsome.
...and I chuckled. And I found that laughter really is good medicine. The smile on my face has made me feel better already.
On my way,

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. --Proverbs 17:22, NIV
And just because it cheered my heart to remember The Hope of All The Earth...
For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.
Praise awaits You, O God, in Zion; to You our vows will be fulfilled.
O You who hear prayer, to You all men will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins, You forgave our transgressions.
Blessed are those You choose and bring near to live in Your courts!
We are filled with the good things of Your house, of Your holy temple.
You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, Who formed the mountains by Your power, having armed Yourself with strength, Who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.
Those living far away fear Your wonders; where morning dawns and evening fades You call forth songs of joy.
You care for the land and water it; You enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so You have ordained it.
You drench its furrows and level its ridges; You soften it with showers and bless its crops.
You crown the year with Your bounty, and Your carts overflow with abundance.
The grasslands of the desert overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness.
The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing. --Psalm 65, NIV

How Our Economic Status Came to Be...
Young Chuck moved to Texas and bought a donkey from a farmer for $100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day.
The next day he drove up and said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news, the donkey died." Chuck replied, "Well, then just give me my money back." The farmer said, "Can't do that. I went and spent it already." Chuck said, "OK, then, just bring me the dead donkey." The farmer asked, "What ya gonna do with him?" Chuck said, "I'm going to raffle him off." The farmer said, "You can't raffle off a dead donkey!" Chuck said, "Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead."
A month later, the farmer met up with Chuck and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?" Chuck said, "I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two dollars apiece and made a profit of $898.00." The farmer said, "Didn't anyone complain?" Chuck said, "Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."
Chuck now works for Goldman Sachs.
Bwahahahaha... And so, our current economy breeds humor, despite it all. Sometimes, all you can do is laugh. (If only reality wasn't so close...)
Always willing to laugh,
-J
(I found these verses when I searched 'laugh.' It isn't totally related, but it was instructive (ergo, I am including it). Those who practice evil, believing no one can see or will judge--David asks God to judge them...but not to kill them. "Keep them around so that the people of God won't forget the lesson that our omniscient God is a righteous judge and so that Your greatness is declared throughout all the earth." Hmmm...a powerful, interesting prayer.)
They [evildoers] return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. See what they spew from their mouths—they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?"
But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations.
O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about, and bring them down. For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah -Psalm 59:6-13, NIV

"I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. --Luke 12: 4-7

Why would you care? Why am I telling you this? I share this with you so you'll know that even when I'm absent--as I have been often over the past weeks--I am thinking of you. ;-)
That said, I'd better post this now, before it becomes a draft!

I'm Taking A Poll
Here's the deal. I've never been able to determine my face shape. This becomes important for things like choosing hairstyles and applying makeup--topics I don't normally cover here. However, The Journey is a topic I cover here, and it is said journey that has changed things up for me. See, my face used to be round as a bowling ball:

But since God has brought me along on this journey, it is no longer round. But what is it?

So, just for fun, I though I would add a poll to my page. Check out the column on the right to cast your vote. It's not nearly as vital as, say, the election on November 11. But it might cause you less indigestion. ;-)
Smiles,
-J
A Post Script Lament: I think it's cool that my eyes seem to have gotten larger. But why did my nose have to do the same?
P.P.S. In response to popular demand (thanks to the two of you!), more on The Journey is coming soon!

Rising To The Challenge
The week before, two of the girls in my Sunday School class approached me after church with a challenge: "Miss J, we challenge you to wear something that's not black. Or white or gray. Or navy or tan. Something bright!" Okay! Can do!
Or not. Uh...it's harder than it looks. My entire wardrobe is black. Or white or gray. Or navy or tan. That's it. All I own are neutrals.
See, I'm in my in-between wardrobe right now--out of my big clothes but not yet to my final destination. I just need some things that will tide me over for now, and that will work with each other and in most environments. And that are on clearance. Ergo, all my clothes are cheap, mid-dressy neutrals. (Okay, it's also possible that I really like neutral colors. That may have played a part in wardrobe selection. But the cheap, available, flexible-ness-es definitely contributed.)
So....I had to go shopping. It had to be really cheap. As in, really, really cheap. As it so happened, I stopped by Sam's Club after church for some apples, and lo and behold, there was a really cute sheath dress--only one--and it was in my [new] size! AND, it was only eight bucks and some change!
Presto, chango! I own a sleeveless dress with a white base that is smothered in bright turquoise daisies. I love daisies.
Now, this is a substantial branching out for me, not just because of the color, but for several other reasons as well:
1. I haven't worn a sleeveless shirt since I was in middle school. Let's just say my arms aren't my favorite body part. But you know what? I'm thirty-{muffle, swish, rumple} and I just don't have enough time left on earth to worry about what you think about my upper arms, k? Plus, they look a heck of a lot better than they did a year ago, so what.ev.er! {wink}
2. I only just started wearing dresses again because, well, my legs weren't my favorite part of my body either. (You'll understand more if you read this, too.) With few exceptions, I stopped wearing dresses some many years ago.
3. I have--for the first time since I was a little girl--started going bare-legged [read: without hosiery]. I am surprised at how freeing it is! :-)
Milestones, all. However, with dress in hand, I have a new dilemma. I have nothing to wear on my feet. All the shoes I own are...neutrals. Black, mostly, with a few brown thrown in for good measure.
So my busy week takes over, and on Saturday night at 8:45 p.m. I find myself heading out the door to (hopefully) find shoes to go with my white-but-mostly-turquoise dress. I'm gonna have to take whatever I can find.
And what I find is clearance [yea!]. And it's also out of my comfort zone. See, until last summer, I didn't wear shoes that displayed my feet. Nope, didn't wear sandals at all. 'Cause my feet weren't my favorite part... Oh, you know? Well, I was also scarred by a stint selling specialty shoes in college. We won't go there now; you might be eating...
So my clearance shoes leave my feet nearly naked, but here is what I came up with:

So...the outfit is compiled. And when Sunday morning dawns (or a few hours later), I don my out-of-my-comfort-zone outfit and whisk off to meet my challengers.
And they don't show.
Nope. Didn't even bother to make to Sunday School that week. [Narrowing of the eyes here] I.will.find.them. In fact, I planned to go to their houses on Sunday afternoon. No kidding.
However, they were saved the horror by showing up for worship and seeing my glorious outfit there. [They were not, however, sufficiently impressed, IMHO.]
Wanna know the best part of the day? About five of the youth I work with found me after church to make sure I knew...that someone else was wearing the EXACT same dress that morning.
Lovely. Just lovely.
Secretly, I do think it looked better on me, though. After all, my outfit wasn't just a dress and some shoes. It was a trophy to how far I've come.
Reveling in the little things,
-J
(c) 2008
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

I'm Gonna Need A Support Group
I know, I know, they make decaf of these things now, but you and I both know it's not the same... How will I ever wake up in the morning?! What was he thinking?!
Okay, okay, I'm calming down now... I just wanted to ask you to pray for my roommate...And my co-workers...And anyone who has to have contact with me over the next week or two as I detox. There may be some concern for their physical safety...
And if anyone has survival stories out there, feel free to share them. It would be good to believe that one can survive without caffeine. I'm sure your stories are fairy tales, but nonetheless...
Caffeine-less, but with many other things for which to praise God (I just won't be able to think of them until 3:00 PM...),

Something I Probably Shouldn't Share...
Had a moment yesterday. A brunette-acting-blond moment. It's rather embarrassing, actually. Let me start with my defense. My life is really busy right now, especially at work, and I do feel scattered most of the time, but something like this, well, I can't have dementia yet, can I?
Wednesday, I realized that my follow-up doctor's appointment was Thursday at 11:15 a.m. So I went about arranging to go: informed both bosses and the receptionists, arranged around various work activities, canceled a long-planned lunch with a friend, etc. On Thursday, I was in full-run mode. I was moving and solving from the moment I arrived. At 11:08 a.m., I tore out of the building and rushed to my doctor's office. I arrived at 11:18 a.m. (late, but she always is so I wasn't too worried), signed in, and plunked myself down in the waiting area to read a magazine. My doctor's office is a small, single-doctor office, and I've been going for years, so everyone there knows me by sight (read: there is no anonymity here). A moment after seating myself, the receptionist calls me up to the desk, "Uh, J, your appointment is at 11:15 a.m. on the 20th."
Long pause on my end. "That's next Thursday, isn't it?" "Mmhum," a smile trying to break free from her tightly clasped lips. Me: "Am I the earliest person ever for an appointment?" "Bwahaha..." We both broke out laughing loudly.
All I can say is, I'm glad I'm thirty-five not seventy-five, 'cause they would have sent me in for memory tests in a heartbeat otherwise. Perhaps they should anyway...
A tad embarrassed, but early for once in her life,

The Faith of a Child
It was Palm Sunday and, because of a sore throat, five-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm branches. The boy asked what they were for. "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by."
"Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go, He shows up!"

Funny, But True
Random Memories--all true--and more as I think of them.
I once...
· Got locked in a zoo after hours
· Held a live bee in my mouth without getting stung
· Was asked out by an ambassador
· Ate silk worm larvae
· Told a SS teacher she was wrong, 'cause my daddy was in seminary and he told me differently (I was four, and I was wrong)
· Tripped on a plane, fell completely, flat-out down, taking a flight attendant and two glasses of wine down with me (It was a long flight.)
· Was nearly deported (not from the U.S. )
· Lived through a 5.0 earthquake and didn't even know it had happened
· Ran toward riots in two different countries (my poor mother)
· Lived through a locust plague--seriously
· Fell asleep mid-meal, mid-bite
· Listened while a waiter sang Happy Birthday to my friend on my birthday
· Forgot I was wearing neon green undies when I did a quick change into cream pants for a night out in Chicago (ahhhhhhhhh!!!!)
· Set myself on fire (no serious damage, but some hair loss)
· Stayed awake for 42 hours straight
· Sang karoke with my friend Rachel in a Vietnamese bar (in KS). The lyrics were translated from English to Vietnamese and back again, so it was unintelligable.
· Went for a walk in an absolute downpour with my mom. We were both sick for a week.
· Floated past my house in my car when our street flooded
· Led others to dance 'Stayin'-Alive' style in a Korean dance club (in S. Korea)
· Got picked up by American-hating Bengalis in Hong Kong (didn't last long)
· Was offered camels in exchange for marriage (may yet regret turning that down...)
I'm sure I'll think of others, so keep listening...
